Moldova expects good early plum harvest despite frosts

Moldovan fruit growers in several central and eastern regions are forecasting a relatively strong early plum yield, despite late April frosts.

According to sector representatives cited by Logos Press, early varieties such as "Čačak's Early," "Čačak's Best," and "Piteștianka" have largely avoided serious damage.

Commercially significant yields of early plums are relatively rare in Moldova. Due to spring frosts, plum orchards in many Eastern European countries have been severely affected. As a result, the expected shortage is likely to drive up demand for early-season plums on the European market.

In contrast, late-season plum varieties in Moldova appear to have suffered more damage from the cold, according to farmers' observations. However, "Stanley," the country's main late-season and export-focused variety, appears to be in good condition.

At the same time, reports indicate a significant shortfall in fruit production this year in Moldova's western regions, particularly in the plum-producing Nisporeni district.

In recent years, Moldova has produced 80,000–100,000 tonnes of plums annually.
