Media reports Putin envoy to visit Washington

(MENAFN) Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s economic envoy and CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, will visit Washington this week, according to reports from CNN and Axios. Dmitriev's visit follows a meeting in Saudi Arabia in February where US and Russian officials agreed to begin normalizing bilateral relations. This marks the first visit by a senior Russian official to the US since President Joe Biden suspended diplomatic ties in 2022.

Dmitriev is expected to meet with Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s Middle East envoy. The US Treasury reportedly lifted sanctions against Dmitriev temporarily to allow his visit. Dmitriev responded to the news by acknowledging the resistance to US-Russia dialogue and suggesting that improved relations could be crucial for global peace and security.

This visit comes after Trump threatened secondary tariffs on Russia if no progress is made in halting the Ukraine conflict. Russia has accused Ukraine of violating a ceasefire agreement related to energy infrastructure, and Moscow continues to demand that Ukraine abandon its NATO ambitions and recognize Russian sovereignty over Crimea and other regions.
