Pray and proclaim the Word, Pope tells new bishops

March 21, 2016

Pope Francis ordained two priests to the episcopate on March 19 and called upon them to be servants who preach and proclaim the Word of God.

The two new bishops are Archbishop Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, a Spaniard who has served as secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue since 2012, and Archbishop Peter Wells, the new apostolic nuncio to South Africa and Botswana. The latter was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Tulsa and served as Assessor for General Affairs of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State from 2009 until his new appointment.

“Proclaim the Word on every occasion: opportune and not opportune,” the Pope preached at their ordination Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. “Admonish, rebuke, and exhort with all magnanimity and teaching. And through prayer and the offering of the sacrifice for your people, draw from the fullness of Christ's holiness the multiform richness of divine grace.”
